Slip Number 2025-31
Date: August 1, 2025
- Utterance:
"lurge onto Columbus Pike"
- Target:
The only reasonable (most reasonable) target here would be 'merge'
- Discussion:
There was a lot of pressure to speak quickly as this error was made while heading FAST on a highway and the flustered co-pilot was trying to be helpful with the GPS
My first thought is that this is a splendid combination of 'merge' and
'lunge'. But, it is worth noting the the /lo/ in 'Columbus' is in the onset of the stressed syllable, and so that this might be a natural phonological anticipation. Disappointing though, since 'lurge' is a great word.
